Bring Lessons About Parliament and Government to Life

This teacher-driven program for students in grade 6 and grade 9 invites teachers to move their classrooms to the Alberta Legislature for a week and watch as their lessons come to life! What's more, School at the Legislature adapts to student and teacher needs.

  • Daily exploration of the Legislature building
  • Mock Legislature simulation
  • Watching the Assembly in Session
  • Grounds tour (weather permitting)
  • Meeting and interviewing Legislative Assembly staff

INTERVIEWS

Arrange interviews and presentations with MLAs and other officials, including

  • Office of the Lieutenant Governor
  • Office of the Speaker
  • Clerk of the Legislative Assembly
  • Sergeant-at-Arms
  • Legislature Grounds staff 

Make learning about Alberta's system of governance fun and tangible through first-hand observation and discovery. On-site tours and interviews help students create meaningful connections to the real world.

French Language Options Are Available

Program activities are available in French, including the Mock Legislature program and visits to the Legislature Building. Some small group interviews and presentations in French are also available.

 

Learning at the Legislature provides meaning and context for units on government and the parliamentary process that a classroom setting never could.

PROGRAM COST

There is no cost for the School at the Legislature program. There is no reimbursement for costs related to meals, accommodations or transportation that might be incurred during the program.

Planning Session Included

Teachers participate in an orientation session in August during which they visit the site, meet the Education Coordinator and begin planning their program week. Teachers prepare a week's worth of lessons and choose from available activities, interviews and presentations.

Applications

The program runs from September to June. All grade 6 and 9 teachers from across Alberta are eligible to apply to this program. Applications are run through Inquiring Minds, an organization of site-based learning programs in and around Edmonton.
